The Clinical and Statistical Study of the Cesarean Section


Abstract
The cesarean section is not infrequently desired in the obstetrical practice, ;nowadays.
The results of the statistical study of 360 cases, who received the Cesarean section, in the Obstetrical department, College of Medicine, Korea University from January, 1968 to December, 1972 were obtained as following:
1. The incidence of the Cesarean section was 7.4 percent and showed increasing tendency.
2. Among 360 cases, the highest percentage was in the age group of 36 to 40 years of age and the priori-paras had the most.
3.; In the indications for the Cesarean section, the cephalo-pelvic disproportions were the most frequent as 129 (35.8%) cases, and previous Cesarean sections, malpresentations, and placenta previas were in the order of frequency.
4. The multi-paras, who had received the Cesarean section, were 81(22.5%) and, also, the cephalo-pelvic disproportion, as the indication, had the most of 22(27.2%).
5. In the method of the operation, the low cervical Cesarean sections were 294(81.7%), 48 of the classical Cesarean sections, and 18 had the sub-total hysterectomy, afterwards.
6. In the anesthetic method, the general anesthesia had the most of 300 (83.3/), local procaine infiltration and general anesthesia had 55(15.8%), 2 of spinal anesthesias and 3 local infiltrations.
7. The birth weight of the newborn of 139(38.6%) cases were in the range of 3,001 to 3,500-gm. and 35(9.7%) had the prematurities and the Apgar score of the newborns ¢¥ increased-¢¥as the birth weights grew heavier.
8. The perinatal mortality of the Cesarean section was 5.8 percent and the causes of the fetal death were abruptio placenta, malpresentations, and rupture of the uterus, respectively.
9. The average¢¥blood loss during the operation was about 625cc and this amount of blood loss was slightly more than that of the spontaneous normal vaginal deliveries.
10. The incidence of the post-operative complication was 47(13.0%) and the wound infection had he most of 15.
11. 138(38.3%) had the other incidental operative procedures with Cesarean section and, among hem, the tubal ligation had the most.
